Description
Judging by the polish and the patina, many hundreds of thousands people have rubbed the nose of this lion as they entered the west portal at Cologne Cathedral. This detail shows the bronze door pull and metal work of this famous cathedral in astonishing detail.
Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1248, but was halted around 1560. It remained unfinished for over three centuries. But in the 1840's work was restarted, and this grand Gothic cathedral was completed in 1880 still true to the original medieval design. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
